What is SAM?

SAM is a mobile Vehicle Activated Sign (VAS) system which is an innovative way to remind drivers and riders in Norfolk about the dangers of excessive and inappropriate speed.

SAM Vehicle

SAM is run by an operator from designated marked vehicles and deployed throughout the county. The speed detection signs are set up by the operators who programme into the system the relevant speed limit for that particular road. If the speed of a vehicle is below the speed limit the device shows a ‘smiley face’ symbol and the actual speed of the vehicle. This indicates that their compliance to the speed limit is appreciated. If a vehicle is detected as travelling above the speed limit, then the actual speed will be displayed on the sign as the vehicle passes. To prevent vehicles being driven at excessive speeds to trigger the device, the operator sets speed parameters into the equipment. The SAM equipment also records the speed of every passing vehicle within the threshold. The SAM operator also provides speed and vehicle flow data to the parishes and areas that are visited.
